5 tips for CTE programs that propel students post-graduation
A perspective on CTE, authored by Second Mile’s VP of Educational Platforms, David Zeiler, was featured in District Administration.
The piece highlights the important role CTE fills in building essential pathways for student success – especially in alternative high schools. The article also discusses the evolving role of AI on the job market as well as how well-designed CTE programs prepare students for stable, well-paying careers that require hands-on skills, align with community workforce needs, and can’t be replaced by technology. The opinion also recognized that college is not the only path, emphasizing the importance of career coaching and helping students find purpose.
From the article:
“With automation and artificial intelligence reshaping the labor market, Career and Technical Education programs are more important than ever. While many traditional high school graduates pursue four-year college degrees, a significant and growing number of students—particularly in alternative education settings—are entering the workforce or technical training programs directly. CTE programs fill a critical gap by offering hands-on, practical training for careers that require human skill, creativity and judgment, from healthcare and culinary arts to carpentry, plumbing and HVAC.
Well-designed CTE programs do more than prepare students for a first job; they connect education to real community needs and help students discover careers they’re genuinely passionate about. Through strong partnerships with local industries, exposure to multiple career paths and individualized support from dedicated career coaches, students graduate with valuable credentials, a clear plan for the future and the confidence to succeed—whether they enter the workforce, pursue vocational training or continue their education.”
