Skyview hosts Grammy winning artist as he returns home, inspires local students
Jeffrey Williams, better known as the superstar rapper Young Thug, who grew up in Atlanta, returned to the area to visit Skyview High School to give the local students and families advice on the value of education – and on what path not to take.
“Gangs and guns, I think that’s lame. I wish I had someone like me to talk to me about that when I was in school,” Williams said, before expanding on the importance of staying in school and getting a diploma.
Williams spent time talking with students, parents, and grandparents. He shared stories from his childhood, talked about his regrets, and how he’s guiding his own children from repeating the same mistakes.
“I’m a superstar,” Williams acknowledged. “My words mean something, but I have to do the right thing with them. People listen to me.”
In addition to speaking with students about the importance of education, avoiding guns and violence, and highlighting career opportunities that exist in the music industry, Mr. Williams also opened new doors for the students, most notably:
- Mr. Williams has made multiple donations – contributing a total of $15,000 to the school to date that will support the school’s ongoing efforts to support at-risk youth.
- Students and staff were gifted access to a special “Hometown Hero: Young Thug & Friends” Benefit concert.
Following the concert, Shelley Leger, the Principal at Skyview, noted, “What made it more meaningful was hearing our students share how much they enjoyed [the concert]. For some, it was their very first concert, and their excitement carried all the way back from the venue and into today, as many returned to school still talking about the experience.”
The excitement and inspiration have been evident as Skyview kicked off it’s 2025-26 school year with this special visit from Mr. Williams.
