Second Mile Education Releases First Post-Graduate Outcomes Report

More than 20,000 graduates were asked where life has taken them since graduation. Their answers are now published in full.

Second Mile Education has released its first post-graduate outcomes report, a new annual publication that follows graduates past the stage and into college, career and technical training, military service, and the workforce.

The report joins Second Mile’s annual impact report, which covers academic results including graduates, credit earning, reading growth, and grade point average. Going forward, the organization will publish both each year. The impact report measures what students accomplish while they are enrolled. The outcomes report measures what happens after.

Second Mile has followed up with its graduates for more than a decade. This report brings scale to that practice. An open survey went out by text message to every student who has ever graduated from one of its schools, a list of more than 20,000 names covering every campus and every graduating class in the organization’s history. Responses came in directly from graduates, and AI-powered analysis made it possible to code and categorize every answer, including the written ones. No graduates were screened out and no group was targeted. Responses were not edited, filtered, or held back. What graduates reported is what the report shows.

Among the graduates who answered:

• 97% went to college, pursued career or technical training, enlisted in the military, or joined the workforce.
• 64% went on to pursue further education after receiving their diploma.
• 36% enrolled in or completed higher education, and 36% pursued career and technical training or certification.
• 10% enlisted for service.
• 88% are earning in the workforce, and among alumni five or more years past graduation, 92% reported being actively employed in their field.
• 31% are balancing a job and college enrollment at the same time.
• 35% hold skilled or credentialed jobs, including nurses, engineers, electricians, and business owners.

Those results carry more weight considering where Second Mile students begin. Students enroll with an average grade point average of 1.60. Ninety-six percent arrive reading below grade level, on average at a third grade level, and 98% arrive performing below grade level in math, on average at a fourth grade level. That is the starting line for the graduates in this survey, and it is what makes their answers worth publishing.

That has always been the full assignment. Second Mile exists to help students graduate and to prepare them for post-secondary success. This report is the first published measure of the second half of that work.
