A Tailored Roadmap To Success

How Skyview helped one student turned excessive electives – and a diploma years delayed – into a tailored plan to graduate and become a pediatrician

Alexa’s story begins with a perplexing puzzle: despite a stellar 3.4 GPA and no failed courses, she found herself facing a graduation two years delayed. The culprit? An excess of electives — fifteen credits of them! — far exceeding the required four, while crucially, only six of her sixteen mandatory credits for graduation were complete.

I had to restart everything,” Alexa recalls, the weight of the revelation still evident in her voice. “I had moved to Mexico at 4 years old, came back, didn’t speak English well. I had been in five schools in two years. I didn’t know anything about school. Then they tell me I’m going to be 2 years late for my graduation. I was just trying to graduate on time like a regular high school. When I heard that? I was mad. I didn’t want to go to school anymore.

After her moment of doubt, Alexa refused to be deterred. Her resilience led her to Skyview, where she found not just any courses, but a tailored roadmap to success. Skyview offered her the precise classes she needed, the ability to progress at her own pace, and an individualized graduation plan. Most importantly, it offered her hope and autonomy. “At Skyview,” Alexa remarks excitedly, “you can graduate when you’re done. You can go faster in this school. You don’t have to wait for everyone else. I never knew there was a high school like this.

It was at Skyview that Alexa’s educational goals evolved. An exploratory visit to a local college unveiled possibilities that extended beyond high school. “I wanted to do something for my future, but never thought about college. Now? I’m planning to go to college. Georgia State University. I would like to be a pediatrician.”

Alexa reflects on her stint at Skyview with fondness and appreciation. The school wasn’t just a stopgap; it was a perfect fit. “When I got here, I was sad. I was so upset because of all those electives. But even if I didn’t take all those electives? I would still like to be here. It’s really cool. In regular school, I don’t think they help you like this.”

Alexa is proof positive of the importance of taking control of your own academic journey, as she found success despite setbacks, language gaps, and a lack of hope, once she found herself flourishing in the right environment for her.
