I Know Now that I can Be Someone

How a positive atmosphere at Kendall Greens helped shift one struggling students narrative from anxiety and depression to self-confidence and academic success.

Hector’s struggles in school began early.

“It started in elementary school,” he recalls. “I wasn’t the best student, but I tried. The classes were large and I couldn’t keep up. I started getting bullied. Nobody ever told me I had ADD or ADHD. I developed anxiety and depression. I was in a class I didn’t belong and I got left behind. I’ve been through a lot. It was tough…” Hector trails off before centering himself.

“I’m here now — and I’m grateful.”

Before coming to Kendall Greens, Hector says he wandered through a system that didn’t seem to recognize his struggles. He repeated both the 2nd and 7th grades and eventually aged out of middle school. It made him feel as if there were no point in trying and that a high school diploma wasn’t possible.

Enrolling in Kendell Greens, Hector found a second chance — and new hope. The small class sizes, individualized learning, and family atmosphere helped him see both school and the world in a whole new light.

This school is amazing — it’s like a big family here!,” he exclaims.

“With the faculty, it really is like a parent. They will treat you nicely and support you, but they also hold you accountable. It’s a place you want to come back to. Everybody is so positive. You can’t fail. It really is the best.

At Kendall Greens, Hector says he not only found a place where he feels comfortable, but a place where he can learn, and learn quickly. Now, as he prepares to graduate in what would be his junior year of high school, Hector says he’s filled with gratitude and optimism.

“I’m blessed to be in such a great environment. I know now that I can be someone.
