From Ready to Give Up to Ready for College
Palmetto Park helped Janiya complete her remaining credits, improve her GPA, and begin preparing for a future in mental health.
Before arriving at Palmetto Park High School, Janiya felt lost in an educational system that didn’t meet her needs. “Distracted” and “unmotivated” due to a lack of support, she faced transcript inconsistencies and a gap in attendance that required her to retake essential courses. With only two classes left to graduate, she struggled to find the motivation to finish.
The turning point came when her mother began working at Palmetto Park as a data specialist. Seeing the school’s potential firsthand, she encouraged Janiya to enroll. The experience proved to be transformative. “My experience was better than I expected because I had a support system when I wanted to give up. Everyone at Palmetto Park is very supportive.”
Beyond the emotional support, the school provided the practical structure she needed. Palmetto Park’s flexible scheduling allowed Janiya to study in the mornings and work in the afternoons. When the workload felt overwhelming, staff members like Ms. Seymour and Ms. Potter stepped in to provide a lifeline. “They gave me one-on-one support when I needed.” Empowered by this guidance, Janiya successfully completed her remaining classes and raised her GPA to prepare for her next chapter.
Having found her way back to her goals, she now advocates for the school’s unique approach: “I would recommend Palmetto Park to anyone who wants to graduate earlier or get back on track.” Janiya is now looking toward the summer, where she plans to apply to Palm Beach State College to become a mental health therapist and give back to her community.
