From Newcomer to Honors Graduate
How a daunting transition quickly became a remarkable story of academic success.
Miguel enrolled at Green Springs High School in May 2025 facing challenges many would consider overwhelming. Having recently emigrated from Cuba, he was adapting to a new country, navigating an unfamiliar school system, learning a new language, and working to complete all graduation requirements in less than a year. From his very first day on campus, however, Miguel demonstrated quiet focus and an unwavering commitment to succeed.
Reflecting, Miguel recalls how uncertain those early days felt. “When I arrived in the U.S., I felt lost and did not know how to do many things. I started working but knew I needed to get back to school. I found Green Springs and went there with just an address, a prayer, and a strong desire to move forward and learn.”
In just nine months, Miguel accomplished what often takes years. He completed 14 courses while simultaneously learning English, mastering rigorous academic content through long hours of study, after-school tutoring, and the steady support of his teachers. What began as a daunting transition quickly became a powerful story of growth and achievement.
One of his most notable accomplishments was passing both required state graduation exams in Reading and Math, despite starting with no English proficiency. Determined to go beyond the minimum requirements, Miguel pushed himself even further. While managing a full high school course load, he completed college-level Artificial Intelligence coursework through Coursera, expanding his knowledge in emerging technologies. He also dedicated time to serving his community, completing 130 service hours by collecting recyclables and trash from local beaches and planting sea oats to help protect Florida’s shoreline.
Miguel credits the support of the entire Green Springs community for helping him succeed. “So many people at Green Springs helped me to tackle all my challenges, from my teacher to my math coach…I built up a team of professionals who each helped me get to my goal of graduating high school so I can begin my dream of entering the university and becoming a veterinarian.”
In February 2026, Miguel graduated with full honors, earning an impressive 3.37 GPA. His journey concluded with a proud moment familiar to all Green Springs graduates: signing the school’s beloved Wall of Fame. This cherished tradition, where each graduate adds their name as a symbol of perseverance and accomplishment, stands as lasting proof that success is earned through dedication.
Miguel’s story is more than an academic success; it is a testament to what can happen when determination is met with opportunity and support. Deeply devoted to his family, he is motivated to help them build a strong foundation in their new country. Looking ahead, he plans to enroll in the Honors College at Miami Dade College and pursue veterinary medicine.
“My future looks brighter now, and I plan to continue to study so I can give my family a better life in this wonderful country full of opportunities!”
At Green Springs High School, Miguel’s journey will continue to inspire students for years to come.
