A Diploma, a New Direction, and a Family Legacy

Riverside Charter High School gave Sophia the flexibility to complete her education after a difficult period in her life and take the next steps toward a career in emergency services.

Sophia was a typical teenager from a close-knit, loving family. “My parents worked hard to raise me right,” she said without hesitation. Then, while still in high school, Sophia’s life was abruptly upended when her father, a firefighter, passed away. “After he passed [my mother] did everything to make sure I still kept that drive and motivation that my father had always pushed me to have,” Sophia shared. But processing her grief while attempting to balance school proved “too much to handle and focus on,” and she ultimately dropped out.

Moving away from her family, Sophia took on the demands of adulthood on her own. Still a teenager, she was suddenly responsible for supporting herself emotionally and financially, paying her own rent, utilities, and other living expenses. She eventually realized that life would be easier if she graduated high school. “I know that with a high school diploma there are more opportunities for my future,” she said. “It’s more than a piece of paper.”

Returning home, Sophia began to search for an alternative way to earn her diploma. Her mother immediately reached out to Sophia’s former middle school guidance counselor, who was now the Assistant Principal at Riverside Charter High School, Bonnie Moravecky. “[Sophia’s mother] asked if we could help Sophia graduate, and I said ‘Yes!’” Moravecky recalled. “The rest is history.”

Enrolling at Riverside, Sophia found the experience completely different than at her previous school. “I was able to do everything at my own pace.” She also appreciated the attention from teachers, particularly Mr. Chalmers. “Being able to have a one-on-one with a teacher who actually cared was the greatest.”

With a more direct academic path, Sophia was able to focus on completing her core curriculum and graduated high school in Winter 2024. She then completed the Emergency Medical Technician program at Eastern Florida State College, where she remains a full-time student. Now, she is preparing for firefighter training in Ocala, following in her father’s footsteps.

“Graduation means freedom,” Sophia said. “The freedom to finally focus on me and the goals I have in life.”

Reflecting on her high school experience, Sophia’s advice to other students is “you don’t have to do things the same way everyone else did it…It’s okay to be selfish and focus on yourself and not worry about what others are doing. Life has ups and downs, try not to let the downs keep you down.”
