Finding the Confidence to Move Forward

At Doral Park High School, Jhanell found the flexibility and support she needed to overcome academic setbacks, graduate on time, and pursue college and a future in law.

When Jhanell enrolled at Doral Park High School her junior year, graduating with her cohort seemed impossible. Behind academically, she needed to recover credits from both her freshman and sophomore years while also completing state testing requirements.

“I had the biggest doubts of my life,” she shared. “I thought I was never going to make it.”

Having found the traditional school day “draining,” Jhanell noted that transferring to Doral Park felt “different,” and she appreciated the more flexible, supportive structure. “I leave earlier, I don’t take homework, I don’t have to switch to different classes every hour,” she said. With a clearer path forward, Jhanell began to see graduation as attainable and recognized that reaching it would require greater responsibility on her part. She committed to making up for lost time, completing her remaining credits, and improving her GPA.

Along the way, she found support in Ms. Valdes, the school’s Reading Coach. The two developed a bond over their shared love of books, and Jhanell began referring to Valdes as “Miss Honey,” a nod to the kind, patient, and deeply caring teacher from Roald Dahl’s Matilda. “She helped me grow and gave me strength and confidence to always remember my only enemy is myself,” Jhanell said.

“Jhanell completely transformed from her arrival at Doral Park,” Valdes shared. “At first, she was distracted and unmotivated. By graduation, she had become a model student.”

In addition to her coursework, Jhanell became an active participant in the school’s Writing Club. Writing also provided an outlet as she processed the loss of her grandmother and caretaker, whom she affectionately called “Mami.” As Jhanell navigated her grief while continuing to work toward graduation Ms. Valdes became an important source of emotional support.

Jhanell graduated on time in spring 2026. One of the first women on her father’s side of the family to reach that milestone, she took particular pride in accomplishing something that some relatives had doubted she would achieve. As guidance for students facing challenges of their own, Jhanell offered the perspective she gained along the way. “Don’t stop believing in yourself ever,” she said. “Trust the process and have patience.”

Today, Jhanell is continuing to build on her newfound confidence and accomplishments. She works as a Customer Service Representative with American Airlines and is pursuing the opportunity to become a flight attendant while continuing her education. At Miami Dade College, she is studying psychology with plans to eventually attend Florida International University and pursue a law degree. Her long-term goal is to become an attorney advocating for survivors of domestic abuse.

Reflecting on Jhanell’s time at Doral Park, Ms. Valdes said, “To this day, I don’t think I’ve met a more grateful person…Jhanell has overcome more challenges than any child should, and she has faced them all head on. She is a champion in my eyes.”
