Building His Future On and Off the Court
Commonwealth gave Stephano the structure and flexibility to balance training, coursework, and a growing sense of responsibility for his future.
An elite basketball player, Stephano was recruited from his high school in the Bahamas to train with Bull City Prep, an premier basketball academy in North Carolina. To pursue his athletic goals while continuing his education in the United States, Stephano enrolled at Commonwealth High School. “Commonwealth has been a very different experience for me,” he shared. “The shorter sessions and flexible schedule allow me to better juggle academics with practice.”
The transition brought new opportunities, but also new challenges as he adjusted to balancing academic and athletic expectations in a new environment. “From the very beginning, it was clear that his talent and potential as an athlete were exceptional,” said Ms. Ianniello, Stephano’s Advisory teacher. “Like many young athletes in his position, however, he initially placed a stronger emphasis on basketball than academics.”
Throughout his time at Commonwealth, Stephano received support from teachers and staff who encouraged him both academically and personally. “There were moments when staying on top of assignments required consistent reminders and support,” Ianniello explained. “However, what stood out most was his willingness to grow.” Over time, Ms. Ianniello said Stephano began to better understand the responsibilities of being a student-athlete. “He took more responsibility for his academic progress and began to take pride in his work in the classroom just as he did on the basketball court.” By graduation, she said Stephano had transformed into “a student who understood balance, discipline, and accountability.”
Stephano expressed gratitude toward “Ms. Ianniello, Ms. Schmitt, Ms. Parker, and the support staff of Commonwealth” for helping him progress through his coursework.
Graduating from high school represents a significant accomplishment for Stephano and his family. “Earning my diploma is a major milestone for me because a lot of people in my family did not earn a high school diploma,” Stephano shared. Looking back on his high school experience, Stephano says he would encourage younger students, and even his younger self, to remain focused academically. “If I could go back in time and talk to my younger self, I would tell him to focus more on school and stay on track.” He also believes Commonwealth’s structure can benefit other student-athletes balancing demanding schedules. “I had a great experience at Commonwealth and would recommend it to any athlete who needs a schedule flexible enough to accommodate their athletics,” he said.
As Stephano prepares for the next chapter, playing basketball at State Fair Community College, his teachers, coaches, and school community continue cheering him on. Ms. Ianniello believes Stephano’s growth and dedication have prepared him for future success both on and off the court. “We are all rooting for him as he works toward his ultimate goal of playing Division I basketball and, one day, making his dream of reaching the NBA a reality.”
